We Will Not Forget Private First-Class Roosevelt Robinson Drafted out of high school at 19 years old Pfc Roosevelt Robinson was sent to Fort Benning, Ga to train as a soldier to fight in World War II. He trained 3 years in Hawaii and then was sent to fight in the Battle of Okinawa. He witnessed one of the droppings of the atomic bombs in Japan. He said the explosion shook the island of Okinawa. In his 95 years he witnessed the civil rights movement, the voting rights act of 1965 and an African American President. Roosevelt was a well decorated soldier. He was given the World War II Victory Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal AP Theater Ribbon and one Bronze Service Star. Among his most valued awards in life were his family. His wife Betty Robinson preceded in death, his parents Matthew and Nancy M. Robinson, brothers and sisters: Alvin D. Robinson, James L. Robinson, Grace Carol, Gladys Butler, Velma Adams and Wilma Lust. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Rudolph Robinson (Dorothy) of Hughes, AR, Albert Robinson of Jackson, TN, Eunice Robson (Bryan) of Atlanta, Nina Robinson, Donna Surratt, Debbie Jo Robinson, Kenneth Robinson of Counce, TN. He also leaves to cherish his memory, a brother, Bobby Robinson (Wanetta) of Purdy, TN and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We will miss our forgotten hero but we will not forget him. |
